Andrew Speaks Out On Leaderboard Update Backlash

Published in News on January 15th, 2025

Update: Since sharing his thoughts on ๐• yesterday, Andrew has deleted the tweets addressing the leaderboard backlash. Neither he nor the Brighter Shores team has made any further statements on the matter. Itโ€™s possible Andrew took some time to reflect and decided the posts werenโ€™t the best look for the game or the team. As someone who writes from the heart and is deeply passionate about his work, itโ€™s understandable that frustration led him to vent publicly. Ultimately, the tweets are gone, Andrew has moved on, and itโ€™s likely the end of the issue. Letโ€™s turn our attention back to the exciting future of Brighter Shores and the dedication of those at Fen Research.

Earlier today, Andrew Gower took to ๐• to express his frustration over the reaction to a recent leaderboard update. The update, rolled out yesterday, was designed to improve transparency by showing players their true rankings while offering an opt-in feature for those who prefer to remain anonymous, displayed as "Anonymous Player."

The change was widely celebrated by the majority of the player base, addressing a long-standing issue that affected most players. However, some of the game's top players, who were the main drivers behind calls for leaderboard reform, voiced dissatisfaction and even boycotted the new system.

In his post, Andrew wrote:

"I am rather disappointed that we put considerable work into improving the leaderboards for the top players (who are the only ones really affected by anonymous players) and in response they just complained and boycotted the leaderboards even more! Makes me feel we totally wasted out time trying to improve the leaderboards for them, certainly wonโ€™t make that mistake again. We will focus on improving the game for everyone else instead."

He later clarified:

"Just to be clear when I say โ€˜i wont make that misrake againโ€™ I just mean I wont prioritise making further changes to the leaderboards, not that I am going to ignore any players"

While Andrew's frustration is understandable, the update largely succeeded in resolving the primary concerns of the vast majority of players. Some top-ranked players claim the anonymity feature may give others a competitive edge, but as it stands, this concern appears to have minimal impact on the fairness of rankings.

The broader takeaway is clear: the development team has worked hard to address player feedback and improve the overall experience. At this stage in the game's early life, it's important to foster constructive dialogue rather than resort to public boycotts or harsh criticism.

Andrew and his team have proven their dedication to improving the game for everyone. Instead of dwelling on this issue, the focus should shift to the game's potential and the exciting updates that lie ahead. Let's support the team at Fen Research and enjoy the journey together. It's still early days for the game, and the future looks... bright. ๐Ÿ˜Ž
